The Jack Kane Community Education Centre was open in the early 1970s and is situated within the Greater Craigmillar area, on the North East side of Edinburgh. The community of Craigmillar is considered to be the forth most deprived area in Scotland. However, whilst suffering from pockets of high levels of deprivation, the centre has many dynamic and motivated people actively committed to creating social change. The Centre strives to work with individuals and groups from not only the Greater Craigmillar area but also outlying areas. Indeed, the centre strives to provide, or assist in providing facilities for learning opportunities to be delivered whereby environments encourage and motivate learners in a safe and comfortable setting. In addition, educational opportunities hope to further the Community Education process as a key contributor to lifelong learning, active citizenship and social inclusion. Utilising these themes as significant bodies in combating social exclusion there is an unstinting commitment to deploy learning as an agent of social change. Against this backdrop, the Jack Kane Community Education Centre supports people in exposing, reflecting then acting on improving personal, community, social and economic well being. The Jack Kane Community Education Centre’s ideology is to engage with people in a pro-active and preventative informal/formal educational way. Additionally, the Jack Kane Community Education Centre believes that people have the potential to make positive contributions to the wider community, thus becoming active experiential consultants and potential partners in taking action. Consequently,
the centre will enable, support and encourage people through educational,
supportive and preventative methods in order for them to find their
own way in life by assisting them to realise and fulfil their self identified
potential. To find out more about the rooms in the centre and to see some before during and after shots click on the highlighted text below. Many of the rooms such as the Den started life as an unused arts and crafts room and the Jean Edwards room was redecorated with the kind financial donation from a centre user and finally the the G8 room, which really is quite self explanitory as to how it got its name. If you would like to visit the centre please get in touch with a member of staff on the contact us page and we will be more than happy to give you more information.
